Born in Tabasco, Mexico, Helen Diaz Calvo is a community advocate and a student looking to promote educational, racial and economic equity in the community. Helen currently attends City College of San Francisco, majoring in economics. Her status as an undocumented immigrant has not been an impediment to work towards her goals.

Since graduating high school, Helen has been involved with various non-profit organizations that have helped her develop her social and political views. At the Digital Action Hub she learned about the digital divide between low-income communities and the tech industry. At the Hub, Helen is able to provide a study space and tech literacy workshops for Excelsior neighborhood and CCSF students. Additionally, Helen is part of Students Making a Change, a student group at CCSF that focuses on policy changing for student equity. Helen also works closely with Voices of Immigrants Demonstrating Achievement (V.I.D.A.), an undocumented student resource center where she is able to provide academic services and legal referrals to incoming undocumented and immigrant youth.

Helen aspires to be an economist that counsels her community for socio-economic and educational empowerment. Helen is a DACAmented youth and current DreamSF Fellow. Through her DreamSF Fellowship placement at Dolores Street Community Services, Helen has the opportunity to develop a wage theft program and clinic for the Day Laborers’ Program and Women’s Collective. She hopes to learn about other immigrant stories to become a stronger advocate as she continues her studies.
