Anamaria Alfaro
Anamaria was born in Colombia, but left at the age of 2 and was raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. When she was 18 and applying for college, Anamaria experienced a rude awakening. Though she had always been aware of her immigration status, she was now painfully aware that being undocumented would severely impact her access to higher education.
Despite a lack of guidance, Anamaria made the decision to move to San Francisco, CA alone with the hopes of seeking access to higher education and better resources as an undocumented immigrant. She attended City College of San Francisco part time while working full time in the restaurant industry. A few years later, Anamaria transferred to University of California, Berkeley where she will receive her Bachelors of Arts in Social Welfare in 2024.
After her time at UC Berkeley, Anamaria hopes to pursue her masters in either social welfare, public policy, or education. As of recently, pursuing a law degree while pursuing her M.A. has also been a thought as it feels the most attainable it ever has. Though Anamaria is still figuring this out, she is set on using her degrees to fight for equity for all.
Anamaria was placed with The Women’s Building for her DreamSF Fellowship. At The Women’s Building, Anamaria will be assisting community members with essential skills such as resume building, job searching, applying to affordable housing through government portals and more. Additionally, Anamaria will help facilitate various workshops on topics like tax preparation, smart money coaching, and technology guidance.
Anamaria loves to spend time outdoors: whether that be sunbathing, swimming, or walking. It allows her to slow down and feel present in the world.
