Victor Hernandez
Victor was born in Jalisco, Mexico, and migrated to the United States with his family when he was 2 years old. Victor was raised in the Bay Area of California and grew up in a hardworking family where his mother worked as a janitor and his father as a gardener. His parents ensured he had everything he needed to succeed, including an education higher than they were able to access in Mexico. Victor is a first-generation college graduate with a bachelor’s in Computer Science from the University of California, Irvine. He aspires to work in the tech industry and inspire other Latinx folks to consider pursuing a career in tech.
While at UC Irvine, Victor was heavily involved with the DREAM center at his campus where he was a Dream Project Fellow working with the Office of Enrollment Management. Having been negatively impacted negatively by immigration policies, Victor feels like it's his duty to advocate for opportunities for the next generation of undocumented students. This led him to be a part of SAFIRE (Students Advocating For Immigrant Rights and Equity), where he built a community with the undocumented students and helped plan the UndocuGrad, a graduation ceremony. SAFIRE inspired Victor to advocate for the undocumented community, especially by mobilizing for CA Assembly Bill 2586, Opportunity For All.
Victor worked hard to get experience in the tech sector in order to become a competitive software developer candidate. In his free time, he took mobile and web development courses to learn new skills that weren’t taught in school. He participated in Google’s Software Product Sprint program where he built a website that would provide a few financial tools in a variety of languages so financial literacy could be more accessible to anyone. He was also a Formation x Netflix Software Engineering Fellow where he improved his technical, system design, and behavioral interviewing skills. Victor is actively looking for freelance/independent contracting opportunities to continue to work on his technical skills, while getting paid in the process.
As a DreamSF Fellow, Victor was placed at the San Francisco Office of Civic Engagement & Immigrant Affairs (OCEIA) where he will be a Data Analyst Assistant with the Community Ambassadors Program. He will gain a deep understanding of the ambassador program and share its impact on San Francisco’s communities through data storytelling.
In his free time, Victor enjoys working out at the gym, hiking, playing soccer or tennis, watching movies, and spending time with friends and family. Currently, he is trying to learn how to cut his own hair. Who knows? Maybe cutting hair will become his new side hustle.
