Esmeralda Martinez
Esmeralda Martinez was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico and immigrated to the United States at the tender age of three. She grew up in Richmond, California, the city of “pride and purpose” where she learned to embrace the values of community building and hard work. Throughout her upbringing, Esmeralda benefited from and actively participated in several non-profit organizations, reinforcing her determination to advocate for marginalized communities and pursue higher education.
Currently, Esmeralda is a senior at UC Berkeley, pursuing a bachelor's degree in Political Science. Throughout her time at Berkeley, she has been a passionate advocate for the undocumented community. Through collaborative work in the Associated Students of the University of California, she has participated in fundraising efforts to secure essential resources such as fellowships and scholarships for undocumented students. Additionally, she played a key role in establishing the first student-led undocumented student organization on campus called IDEAS. This organization has successfully amplified and supported the “Opportunity for All” campaign, which advocates for the employment of undocumented students on California campuses through Assembly Bill 2586. Additionally, this organization serves as a platform for undocumented students at UC Berkeley to socialize, organize, and advocate for themselves on their own terms.
After her time at Berkeley, Esmeralda aspires to continue her education in law and pursue a master’s in public policy. She aims to use her advanced education to advocate for immigrant rights and influence policies that benefit marginalized communities. Her long term goal is to return to her hometown and work to uplift the community that shaped her. Envisioning initiatives that provide legal assistance, educational opportunities and economic resources to underserved populations, ensuring that everyone has a chance to thrive.
As a DreamSF Fellow, Esmeralda is placed at CARECEN, where she will work alongside legal professionals and learn the intricacies of immigration law. Her responsibilities include giving legal consultations, processing visa applications, and filling out waivers. This experience will strengthen Esmeralda’s understanding of the immigration legal system, preparing her for a career dedicated to advocacy and justice.
As an avid music enthusiast, Esmeralda enjoys going to music festivals, where she finds a sense of community through dancing. In her free time, she enjoys exploring hiking trails to keep her grounded and relaxed. Making time for her family is also incredibly important and serves as a reminder of staying connected to the people she loves the most.
