Haibin Yu was born in Guangdong, China. At the age of three, his family moved to Nogales, Sonora, Mexico, in search of better economic opportunities. Growing up in a new country presented challenges, but Haibin's parents' perseverance and hard work instilled in him the values of resilience and determination. When Haibin was 16, his life took a dramatic turn as his parents' business in Mexico went bankrupt, leading him to immigrate unaccompanied to the United States in search for a better future, and in order to provide for his family.

As an unaccompanied child immigrant in a foreign land, Haibin faced significant obstacles, including language barriers and cultural adjustments. However, these experiences have shaped Haibin into the individual he is today, fueling his passion for advocating for immigrant rights and social justice. Despite the challenges of being undocumented, Haibin has remained focused on his education, becoming the first in his family to attend and graduate from a four-year university.

Haibin graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, with a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. During his time at UC Berkeley, Haibin served as an intern for the Undocumented Student Program (USP). Haibin supported undocumented students by providing and guiding them towards mental health, financial, legal, and educational services on campus. Moreover, Haibin’s curiosity and passion for tech helped him to improve different areas of work at USP through the automatization of the USP’s staff workflow with web applications.

The DreamSF Fellowship presents an opportunity for Haibin to align his technical skills and commitment to social justice. Placed at CARECEN, he is excited to contribute to initiatives that support immigrant communities. Haibin's proficiency in web design and digital development will be valuable in enhancing the organization's online presence and amplifying its message to the community.

In his free time, Haibin enjoys exploring the Bay Area, spending time with his friends and family, and engaging in invigorating workouts while blasting his favorite K-pop songs. Additionally, he immerses himself in the world of digital art, ranging from content creation, such as video and photo editing, to following his favorite content creators on YouTube.
